Harvest 11-13-11

This may be the last pepper harvest for this year

Harvest 11-13-11

We had a hard frost a couple of days ago. The beans and cucumbers didn’t make it. It was a worthy experiment, though, because now I know a little bit more about the seasonal rhythms here. The last bean and cucumber plantings need to be in July. The sugar snap peas and cabbages are doing fine. The peppers and the pingtung long eggplants survived, but they’re looking a bit sad. They probably won’t make it through the next freeze. That’s ok. We got a splendid pepper harvest this year. I love that I’m still harvesting peppers halfway into November, though. The first year I gardened here, I was still getting peppers and tomatoes in December. That must have been an unusual year, though, because that hasn’t happened since then.

I’m still putting up the greenhouse, but after that’s up, I’ll start some broccoli and brussels sprouts to go where the beans are now, and maybe some collards.
